  • ๐Ÿ’š The biggest source of waste for a lot of people and families, especially with young children at school - SNACKS!โ € โ € ๐Ÿ’š It seems, gone are the days where three meals a day was all people got to eat in a day, no snacking, everything was homemade and there was no such thing as convenience foodโ € โ € ๐Ÿ’š Falling into the extremely busy, working mum category, I totally get it and it was the biggest fear I had when it came to starting my zero waste journey. My children need to eat, all their friends had snacks for playtime and I like a snack/cake/biscuit with my tea, so what were we to do when I don't have the time to bake three tiered specialties and forage my own granola? โ € โ € ๐Ÿ’š I looked at the cereal bars I bought them repeatedly each week, loaded with sugar, preservatives and additives - even the "healthier" ones. I looked at the ingredients and have now made my own ones and I feel better for it. โ € โ € ๐Ÿ’š Yes there's a lot of sugar in the fresh apple juice that I soak the oats in but not so bad in my eyes. So I decided enough was enoughโ € โ € My method this evening: โ € I poured oats from a paper bag into a bowl, covered with apple juice, let it soak until the apple juice became milky looking (3-4 mins tops) added raisins, mixed and then spread out on a baking tray and stuck it in the oven along with the cauliflower cheese I had in the oven already. Baked until they were golden brown. By the time the cauliflower was ready, I just turned off the oven and allowed the heat inside to carry on baking the oats, I'd say it was in the oven for about 25 minutes.โ € โ € ๐Ÿ’š They've turned out brilliant! The kids have tried a bit now that it's cooled down too and approve, WIN! No more wrapped up, ridiculously expensive oat bars for snack timesโ € โ € ๐Ÿ’š The biggest zero waste elements of this are not the glass bottle of apple juice, nor the paper bag of oats or even the homemade element. They are instead the fact I was using my oven to its capacity and saving resources and the reduced section huge plastic bag of raisins I've been using up for the past two months in various ways. โ € ๐Ÿ’š If you don't have a zero waste shop near you, that's ok! There's a lot of other things you can do

  • ๐Ÿ’š What a day! A group of us today (not all pictured as some had to leave) cleaned up as much as we could along the Clyde at Glasgow Green today . ๐Ÿ’š Several needles unfortunately, what looked like a recycling centres worth of glass bottles and cans, multiple sanitary pads and tampon applicators, a mobile phone, lube packets, condoms, polystyrene, tonnes of "bags for life" ๐Ÿคฆ tubs of paint, milk bottles, clothes - a lot of it was out of reach and some bits looked like people had just emptied their recycling bins in there . ๐Ÿ’š When will it end? ๐Ÿ˜ณ When do you think people will have respect for their surroundings again? What needs to happen to change this?
